Glen and Juliette Varley described the moment they were told that their 4 year old son Lachlan had a life threatening illness in one word - terrifying.
“Our darling little boy Lachlan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in November 2006. The treatment for ALL is a two-year treatment and we hope to be finished by November of this year, however, we will not get the all clear till 2013, so the fear of the cancer returning, is a very real possibility.
Lachlan has had to endure a great deal while in treatment, including countless general anesthetics - it is heart wrenching to watch your little boy go under anesthetic, kicking and screaming, yelling ‘mummy, daddy, don’t leave me’, numerous lumbar punctures, nasal gastric tubes, countless blood tests, weeks in hospital, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth ulcers and skin rashes.
But through all this, Lachlan has never complained, he takes his medicine, which is called chemotherapy, and always has a smile on his face. He looks like any normal 5 year old boy, except he is having treatment for a life threatening childhood illness. Our little boy is our inspiration and our hero.”
