Family Groups

Having a child diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment is an experience that only someone in a similar situation can fully understand. Family and friends can be a great support, but sometimes the best support comes from chatting to a parent you've just met in the Clinic waiting room.

The Oncology Unit of the Children's Hospital at Westmead treats children from families that are incredibly diverse in social, cultural and economic circumstances. Many of these families wouldn't ordinarily cross paths, but the shared experience of childhood cancer seems to create an instant bond.

Although the hospital provides a high level of care for the children and support services for parents, there isn't a structured support network for families outside of the hospital currently in place. After discussions with parents and hospital staff, Cure Our Kids has decided to establish "Regional Family Groups".

The purpose of the Regional Family Groups will be to:

  • Provide an informal support service
  • Supply a local network
  • Assist newly diagnosed families
  • Promote social interaction amongst families
  • Fundraise as a group

We are very conscious of the stress and anxiety that Oncology families face with a child undergoing treatment, so management roles will be clearly defined and responsibilities will be kept to a minimum.

In order to ensure the continuity and longevity of the groups, Cure Our Kids will provide resources and administrative assistance to establish each group. Once a group is up and running, Cure Our Kids are happy to continue providing as much support as is requested, but the direction of the group will be dictated by its members.

This initiative will provide the opportunity for able and interested individuals to come together as a group and make a tangible, positive and lasting contribution. If you are interested in becoming a member of a Regional Family Group, please complete the form below. Alternatively, if you require further information, contact Carolyn Dodds on T: 02 9938 3499 or carolyn@cureourkids.com.au

The following questionnaire (which will be kept strictly confidential) has been designed to give Cure Our Kids information on what your needs are, as well as what you would like to gain from the Regional Family Groups. This information will help both you and us structure the groups to maximise their benefit.
